Sho-yo-gama

The "Shoyo-gama" is a Tanba-yaki pottery in Tanbasasayama, Hyogo Prefecture.

Yuki Oogami is the 3rd generation artisan of Sho-yo-gama. Although all generations of the kiln are still actively producing pottery, the main production is centered around him. Like many other pottery production areas, Tanba-yaki faces the same challenges caused by the lack of younger generations that carry on the tradition of its kilns. Yuki Oogami and his family are bringing a fresh breeze to Tanba, through new creations and communal activities while also preserving traditions.

The new kiln is in a beautifully renovated old building, which houses a showroom of their casual pottery line in the front, and an exhibition and event space on the second floor, where his artistic work is displayed.

As short walk up the hill, a tea house and old building displaying the history of the kiln can be visited.
